Celebrating Naomi’s distinction!
July 2024 – We are proud to announce that Naomi has been awarded the DFG Walter Benjamin Grant for her postdoctoral research on utilizing metabolomics to identify biomarkers for stroke. We congratulate Naomi and express our gratitude to the DFG for this prestigious recognition!
European Stroke Organisation Conference 2024 – Basel
May 2024 – In May, we were honored to present our latest research highlights at the 10th ESOC in Basel. Our team delivered three scientific oral presentations on #1 BD-tau in stroke, #2 proteomics to identify novel biomarkers, and #3 time-of-day effects in stroke. Naomi was invited to give a presentation on the value of multi-omics for stroke trials. Congratulations to the Basel team for organizing a wonderful conference filled with lots of clinically meaningful science and fruitful discussions!
Celebrating Orsalia’s acceptance to the GSN!
May 2024 – Our PhD student, Orsalia-Zoi Veloudiou, has been officially accepted to the Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN). During her studies Orsalia will investigate circadian effects in stroke patients, specifically how chronotypes (e.g. owls and larks) and circadian disruption might influence stroke outcomes. Congratulations, Orsalia!
Leducq Network ECI Meeting 2024 - Madrid
April 2024 – In April, the Leducq Early Career Investigators of our team, Vanessa, Orsalia, Benedict, and Yasin, were hosted by Maria A. Moro and Ignacio Lizasoain in Madrid for the annual Leducq ECIs Meeting. On day one, Martha Merrow's opening lecture on "What 'pervasiveness' means for chronobiology" was followed by a network-wide Zoom meeting with updates from the large working group projects. Day two focused on ECI paired projects, featuring early-stage insights and valuable feedback for the development of these collaborative efforts. Our group extends our heartfelt thanks to the Madrid team for organizing such a memorable event.
Paper in Circulation Research
March 2024 – We are happy to announce that our review on circadian effects on the neurovascular unit has been published in the Circulation Research journal. In collaboration with colleagues from the Consortium International pour la Recherche Circadienne sur l’AVC, in particular Eng H. Lo and team from Harvard Medical School, we present emerging evidence on circadian mechanisms in neurovascular physiology and stroke pathophysiology, emphasizing challenges and opportunities for circadian-based stroke care.
The Guarantors of Brain Conference – London
March 2024 – We are grateful for the opportunity to present our research at The Guarantors of Brain Conference in London on 15th of March. Steffen’s presentation focused on brain-derived markers for monitoring brain injury in acute ischemic stroke, highlighting current findings from our group's research. We extend our sincere appreciation to the conference organizers for the opportunity to share our work and interact!

Orsalia starts her PhD journey!
January 2024 – After successfully completing her MD thesis with us, Orsalia is now undertaking a clinical Ph.D. Her research will focus on investigating how chronotype and disruptors of circadian rhythms affect the functional outcome after ischemic stroke. Welcome to Benedict and Dilara!
December 2023 – We are happy to welcome two new MD students in our team. Benedict studies medicine at the LMU and he is a member of the clinical circadian subgroup investigating the effect of chronotype on stroke outcomes. Dilara comes from Romania, has finished her medical studies at the “George Emil Palade” University, and will investigate circulating stroke biomarkers. Wishing both of you a wonderful beginning!
Metabolon Webinar: “Blood-Based Biomarkers - How Metabolomics Assists Stroke Research to Improve Diagnosis & Monitoring”
November 2023 – We were pleased to accept Metabolon's invitation to present key insights from our research in a webinar. September 2023 – We are glad to host Blanca for her exchange visit as part of her PhD studies in Madrid. She will focus on thrombolytic therapeutic strategies through proteomics in ischemic stroke. Welcome to the team, we are glad to work with you!

Celebrating Yasin’s Academic Achievements
September 2023 – Our PhD student, Yasin Eshraghi, has been officially accepted into the prestigious Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN). Yasin will continue his remarkable work in deciphering the intricate mechanisms underlying thrombus propagation through proteome profiling. Congratulations, Yasin!
Paper in Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology
August 2023 – Our study on the association of the time of day of EVT with clinical outcomes and benefit from successful recanalization after stroke has recently been published in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. This study showed that the association between successful recanalization and outcome was stronger in the morning compared to evening-treated patients with treatment benefit persisting until 24h.
Amgen Scholars Program – LMU
July 2023 – Our lab participated in the Amgen Scholars Program and welcomed Mihaela Dindere, a medical student from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest. Under Vanessa's guidance, Mihaela gained valuable experience with our circadian experimental techniques during her two-month stay. She successfully shared her results in the final Poster Presentation of the Program at LMU Biocenter. We wish Mihaela all the best in her future research pursuits!
Brain & Brain PET Conference in Brisbane
June 2023 – Our PhD student, Vanessa, recently made her mark in Brisbane at the Brain & Brain PET 2023 conference. Her presentation about the influence of Time of Day on Stroke Outcome was a standout feature of the Symposium in Circadian rhythms in cerebrovascular functions and disease. Congratulations!
European Stroke Organisation Conference 2023 – Munich
May 2023 – Munich hosted the ESOC event this year, where we had the privilege of sharing our research with esteemed stroke experts from around the world. We presented two posters, delivered a presentation, and had the honor of chairing one session. Congratulations to Michael, Naomi, Steffen, and Vanessa for their exceptional representation of our lab!

April 2023 – Very excited and proud that one of our PhD Students, Vanessa, recently attended the Early Career Scientist meeting of our Leducq network. Vanessa presented her data on circadian mechanisms after stroke and we are proud that Vanessa represented the ISD in Boston.
Welcome to Orsalia and Nicoló!
April 2023 – We are pleased to announce that our lab has two new members who have joined us as MD students. Orsalia comes from Greece, has finished her medical studies at the University of Athens, and will work on circadian mechanisms in stroke. Nicolò studies medicine at the LMU and will investigate, in close collaboration with Kaj Blennow and Thomas Karikari at the University of Gothenburg, the temporal profile of molecular markers of neuronal injury after stroke. Have both a great start!
Celebrating Linjie’s Academic Journey
April 2023 – Our PhD student, Linjie Zhang, has been admitted to the Munich Medical Research School (MMRS), starting her journey in April 2023. This and the Chinese Government Scholarship will allow her to continue her impactful work in exploring biomarkers associated with ischemic stroke. We congratulate Linjie on this achievement!

April 2023 – We are grateful to be have contributed to a study published in SCIENCE . This study, led by colleagues from the LMU cardiology department, identified specific proteins that are down-regulated during periods of prolonged immobility and protect from thrombosis.

April 2023 – Our study on the value of plasma CGRP levels for assessing collateral flow in patients with stroke is online in STROKE – In collaboration with colleagues from UCLA, we analyzed whether plasma levels of CGRP, one of the most potent vasodilators, can be utilized for assessing collateral flow in settings settings where advanced imaging is not available.

December 2022 – Our study on differences between RCT and real-world cohorts was published in the European Stroke Journal ! In collaboration with the UKE Hamburg, we find that differences in patient characteristics drive associations with outcome after endovascular treatment.
Annual conference of German neurologists in Berlin (DGN-Kongress)
November 2022 –Together with Prof. Christine Klein, the previous president of the DGN, Steffen chaired a session on precision medicine in neurology. We were fortunate to have an excellent line-up of speakers including Götz Thomalla, Ghazaleh Tabatabai, Jan Baumbach, Märit Jensen, Daniel Merk and Luisa Delazer, which led to excellent discussions on the future of neurological precision medicine in Germany.
First in-person Meeting of our Leducq network in Oxford
September 2022 – Teresa, Vanessa and Steffen met collaborators from Oxford, Madrid, Harvard, UCLA, and Stanford from our Leducq network on Circadian effects in Stroke at Oxford University. Excellently organized by Alastair Buchan and his team, we had wonderful three days to discuss science, plan collaborations and get to know each other.
Welcome to Naomi and Julia!
September 2022 – We are very pleased to welcome Naomi and Julia to our team. Naomi joins us as a Postdoc and investigate brain-body interactions after stroke using multi-omic datasets. She conducted her PhD with Geert Jan Biessels at UMC Utrecht. Julia joins us as our new lab manager. She has extensive expertise in numerous experimental methods and has previously worked at the Max Planck Institute and the Technical University Munich. We are very happy for them to join us. Have both a great start!
Excellent Paper in Neuroscience Award by ERA-NET NEURON
July 2022 – We are proud to share that our work on the diagnostic utility of circulating metabolites after stroke won the Excellent Paper in Neuroscience Award by ERA-NET Neuron 2021. In our paper (Annals of Neurology, 2020), we identify, validate, and replicate a set of four circulating metabolites that shows unprecedented utility and outperforms neuroimaging in identifying patients with stroke upon hospital arrival.

November 2021 – Very proud that Teresa won the award for the best abstract at this year’s DoktaMed, an annual conference for medical students at LMU Munich. Congratulations!
